Welcome to Schloss Glücksburg
Dear visitors, dear children,
Schloss Glücksburg was built between 1583 and 1587 by Johann the Younger, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein. It is one of the most significant family seats in Northern Europe.
Today it is owned by the Schloss Glücksburg Foundation, a family-owned foundation whose aim it is to preserve this unique cultural heritage and to present it to the public. By tradition, we would like to provide a vivid impression of an inhabited house so that you can experience history and culture first-hand. In addition to paintings, porcelain and furniture, particularly our unique 17th- and 18th-century tapestries bear witness to the castle’s eventful history. In this respect, I would like to draw your particular attention to the Danish King, Christian IX. He bears the epithet “Father-in-Law of Europe” because his children have left their marks in various European monarchies. One of our exhibitions is dedicated to him. Children can expect a special experience in our fairy-tale world.
Let the 500-year-old motto of Schloss Glücksburg's builder, Duke Johann the Younger of Schleswig-Holstein, inspire you:
G G G M F, GOTT GEBE GLÜCK MIT FRIEDEN
(God grant happiness and peace)
On behalf of our family, I wish you an unforgettable visit.
Christoph Prinz zu Schleswig-Holstein
Chairman of the Schloss Glücksburg Foundation
