“The Foundation exists to care for and maintain the Castle, its grounds and its furnishings and to make them available to the public, using all its income to do so. Our aim is to preserve for our visitors the priceless historical significance of the building and its works of art.”
Christoph Prinz zu Schleswig-Holstein
The Glücksburg Castle Foundation
Glücksburg Castle served various purposes during its eventful history, most of them more associated with administration and government rather than the typical functions of a private residence. In 1922, the family incorporated the building into a non-profit-making Foundation, which even then in its cultural aims foresaw interest and involvement of the general public. Today, the Foundation’s objective is laid down in Article 2 of its Charter as follows:
“The aim of the Foundation is the promotion of art and culture as well as the preservation of this historical monument. In particular, this aim will be achieved through our efforts to maintain Glücksburg Castle and the treasures which belong to it in a manner in keeping with their historical and cultural importance, and by making the Castle open to the public…”
The head of the Foundation is provided by the family which bequeathed the building. Since 1980, this responsibility has rested with Christoph, Prince zu Schleswig-Holstein. He is assisted by a six-strong senior, controlling board which includes, as well as the Schleswig-Holstein family, a representative of the State of Schleswig-Holstein and the District Administrator of the region of Schleswig-Flensburg.
To achieve the objectives of the Foundation is, of course, a tremendous challenge, given that income from the public fails to cover the significant maintenance and other expenses of preserving in place this piece of cultural and historical heritage. Success is only made possible by developing an income from commercial projects, so far as they are compatible with the cultural aims of the Foundation, and with the support of third parties. Thankfully, the “Friends of Glücksburg Castle,” together with other private supporters, have been there to be relied on. Financial support has also come from the State of Schleswig-Holstein, the European Union and, in the past, from the German Federal Government.
The Glücksburg Charter states very clearly that all income and any profits which arise must be used to further the aims of the Foundation. As an altruistic body, the Foundation has a right to accept donations and can issue receipts for any it receives.
