The library contains several thousands books with the main emphasis on local history. Personal papers of members of the ducal family, mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries, can be found in the archive.

Historical Documentation
Numerous records illustrate the Schleswig-Holstein uprising against Denmark in 1848 (provoked by the joint constitution proposed by Denmark) and its end after the battle near Idstedt in 1850 when the Prussian troops withdrew under pressure from Russia and Austria, leaving the dukedoms to fight on alone. Further documents in this exhibition relate to the German-Danish war of 1864, the Danish defeat at the Düppeler Bank and finally the separation of the Dukedoms of Schleswig and Holstein from Denmark. Contemporary photographs dating from 1864 show the castle as a military hospital.
